PERSONAL NOTE

As the holidays approach the little kid in me comes out to play.  I love the holidays, the music, the traditions, the parties, connecting with family and friends and certainly the spiritual connection.  This month I'm very excited to join in the birthday celebration for the 160th year of the Star of India and will be sailing alongside this magnificent ship in mid-November.  They only sail her every five years and it's quite an experience.  It's an all-day event and with any luck we will have some wind that day.  Here's a picture of the last time she sailed.

Navigating the Holidays with Grace: 10 Tips to Sidestep Holiday Stress

From the spooky nights of Halloween to the grand finale of Super Bowl Sunday, the holiday season unfolds, offering us joy, warmth, and, let's face it, a fair share of stress. But fear not, as I've gathered ten invaluable tips to help you keep your balance during this upcoming holiday season.

  1. Organize and Prioritize: Create lists and allocate specific times for tasks. Prioritize your to-do list and be open to the idea of crossing some items off. Remember, you don't have to conquer everything in one go. Tackle your most important and time-sensitive tasks first and celebrate your accomplishments.
  2. Be Realistic: Perfection is a noble aspiration, but it isn't always attainable. Relax, take deep breaths, and do your best. Remind yourself that imperfections can add character and charm to your holiday gatherings.
  3. Stay within Budget: Set a budget and stick to it. This year, vow not to plunge into debt for the sake of gifts. Advertisers may suggest extravagant presents are necessary, but heartfelt and thoughtful gifts, even if homemade, often hold greater value.
  4. Shop Smart: Consider online shopping or gift cards to simplify the gift-giving process. Gift certificates or cards for a loved one's favorite dining or shopping spots can be a wonderful choice, provided they appreciate them.
  5. Don't Hesitate to Ask for Help: Share the holiday load with loved ones. Decorating the house or wrapping presents can be much more enjoyable when done together. Everyone has different preferences, so delegate tasks according to individual strengths and interests.
  6. Minimize Family Drama: When family gatherings evoke tension and anxiety, think outside the box for unique ways to celebrate. Plan well in advance to eliminate last-minute surprises. Embrace the power of technology, allowing you to connect with loved ones through Zoom or Facetime, preserving those cherished moments.
  7. Embrace Unity: The holidays are about coming together, not clashing over differences. Remember that beneath our diverse beliefs, we share common humanity. Try viewing another person's perspective as an opportunity to expand your own understanding.
  8. Self-Care is Key: Start with the foundation of self-care. Prioritize your well-being by eating healthily, ensuring you get enough rest, and staying active. Treat yourself to the small pleasures that nurture your soul, whether it's enjoying your favorite music, a relaxing massage, or simply indulging in a good book.
  9. Find Serenity in Nature: Take a leisurely walk, inhale the crisp air, and seek solace in serene surroundings. Even in bustling cities, finding pockets of tranquility can be therapeutic. In the face of adverse weather, do your best to embrace the outdoors, adapting to your surroundings.
  10. Rediscover Playfulness: Embrace your inner child. Recreate a lost tradition, fly a kite, bake and decorate some cookies, put together a puzzle. Spend quality time with children, family, and friends, cherishing the moments of joy.

As the holidays approach, remember that managing stress is about finding your balance amidst the hustle and bustle. By prioritizing self-care, staying organized, seeking help when needed, and embracing the true spirit of the season, you can sidestep holiday stress and create lasting memories filled with warmth and love.
