This month's article was titled Escaping the Path to Nowhere.  Indecision and inaction are the path to nowhere.  If you don't decide to do something and then take action, you'll be sitting on the sidelines the rest of your life.  As discussed. there are three decisions you can make for any issue.  You can say Yes, No or Maybe and they each have a consequence.   Last, but not least is the word "Maybe".

Don't say "Maybe" if you want to say "No". "--- Paulo Coelho

As a child, did your parents frequently tell you "Maybe" and what you were asking for never materialized?  They may have been undecided at the time, needed more information, or just told you that instead of saying "No".  Saying "Maybe" can make life easier for parents so they don't have to explain their "No".

Today's Coaching Challenge

When you think about it, do you say "Maybe" to a lot of requests?  Is this because you don't want to take the time to consider whether you really want to do something, or you don't want to be uncomfortable by saying "No"?

The reality to saying "Maybe" is that it might be easier than making a decision, however, too many items on your "Maybe" list will just drain your energy.  These things haven't gone away and will have to be dealt with at some point, so it is liberating to just deal with it at the time and decide.

Action to take

The next time someone makes a request of you before you say "Maybe" take a moment to just decide whether you can accommodate the request and if you want to do it.  Then either say "Yes" or "No" and proceed accordingly.  If you are uncomfortable saying "No" go back to last week's Java for some suggestions.
